Escape Coda Canyon
A weekend backpacking trip has brought you into an impressive, narrow canyon. As you walk along the creekside trail, you glance up at the towering walls and spot a hawk soaring high above. Dark thunderclouds have gathered ahead, and as the wind picks up, it pushes the storm straight toward you.
This escape-themed piano series transforms musical navigation into an exciting adventure! Each late-elementary piece challenges students to carefully follow score markings—such as repeat signs, D.C. al Fine, and D.S. al Coda—to successfully escape the scenario. This six-piece series progresses sequentially, with each piece building on the navigational skills learned in the previous one. Designed as a fun, game-like experience, it invites both student and teacher to step inside the music, explore its unfolding adventure, and reinforce essential score-reading skills in an engaging and interactive way.
As the final piece in the series, Escape Coda Canyon introduces the use of D.S. al Coda. The piece begins with loud, powerful blocked chords that represent flashes of thunder and lightning. Then, at a swift tempo, rolling eighth notes move through the middle C area of the keyboard, flowing steadily and evenly. The sustain pedal is used harmonically throughout the piece, and it ends with a bold and exciting coda.
