Escape Segno Swamp
You’ve set out in a small rowboat, hoping to capture photographs of the swamp’s eerie beauty in the early morning fog. Towering cypress trees rise around you, draped in long strands of Spanish moss. The water is gray and murky, dotted with drifting lily pads. Dark shapes of alligators lie motionless in the distance.
This escape-themed piano series transforms musical navigation into an exciting adventure! Each late-elementary piece challenges students to carefully follow score markings—such as repeat signs, D.C. al Fine, and D.S. al Coda—to successfully escape the scenario. This six-piece series progresses sequentially, with each piece building on the navigational skills learned in the previous one. Designed as a fun, game-like experience, it invites both student and teacher to step inside the music, explore its unfolding adventure, and reinforce essential score-reading skills in an engaging and interactive way.
Escape Segno Swamp is slow and suspenseful, beginning in the lowest octave of the piano. As the fifth piece in the series, it evokes dark, murky tones through the use of the D harmonic minor scale with occasional diminished notes. In the middle section, the sustain pedal is used briefly as the performer moves to the center of the keyboard, adding a few eighth notes that heighten suspense and motion.
