Schumann's Last
Known to be Robert Schumann's very last piano work, Theme and Variations in E-flat Major (Ghost Variations) is a lesser-known piece filled with intense beauty, emotion, and reverence. Schumann himself claimed spirits sang the melody to him. Tragically, in the middle of writing this piece Robert Schumann made an attempt to end his life and then finished the piece the following day before being admitted into an asylum for his declining mental health.
Because I have such a deep respect for this work, and have never come across this piece in student literature or in simplified form, I've made this arrangement in hopes to introduce and share this beloved work with intermediate pianists. Shumann's Last introduces the theme and first variation in an easier key signature, with simplified notes and technique, while remaining close to the original work of Schumann.
